A tribute to ‘Sujata’ on the occasion of Bimay Roy’s birth anniversary:
“तुम्हारा सबसे बड़ा गुण ये है सुजाता कि तुममें कोई गुण नहीं है" says Sunil Dutt to Nutan. What a line! And what a clear giveaway of Roy's literary leanings! Because inasmuch as our personalities are a construction of 'atoms of our experience', निर्गुणता is a veritable Pandora's box. Perhaps best left unopened. After all, it’s only the almighty that has been described as निर्गुण. Can we too - mortals, that is - aspire to be so? In attempting to touch upon that question, Roy puts himself in the company of such stalwarts as the bard. Yes, it’s Hamlet I allude to. If critics down the ages have come up with conflicting deconstructions of the Dane, it's because there is nothing to deconstruct. Hamlet is a man without personality. He hasn't allowed any pattern of atoms to define his being. His atoms of experience simply refuse to crystallise around the standard nuclei that are honour, prejudice, love, or religion. And since no गुण translates to no being, the dilemma consuming Hamlet is an obvious one. To be or not to be! छा गए बिमल दा।
